What is FlashDict?
FlashDict is a .NET client application which provides access to publicly-available dictionary resources. Word searching and flashcards are its primary functions. Language study and providing access to translation dictionaries is the primary focus of the initial version. FlashDicts intent is to help the user learn new languages through the process of memorization.
How it works
FlashDict is loosely based on Magic-dic, a Unix-based command-line program written using bash, agrep, and other Unix tools. FlashDict primarily makes use of the Magic-dic dictionaries, which are open-sourced under the GNU2 license. The Magic-dic users and author(s) have spent considerable time and effort to create and maintain these dictionaries, and they are an outstanding resource which should be available under all platforms. There are currently more than 50 dictionaries available for Magic-Dic, and thus now for FlashDict as well.
FlashDict downloads the Magic-Dic dictionaries and converts them to its own XML format. Each dictionary includes some number of entries, (the German-English dictionary has more than 100,000 entries, for example) and each entry contains a given word or phrase in both languages. FlashDict is bundled with a small subset of the most common dictionaries, including French-English, German-English, Spanish-English, and Esperanto-English.
